Our mission is to create disciples for Jesus Christ and to practice His teachings by loving and serving God and one another.
Our History
First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan was officially organized in the summer of 1867. With only twenty-two members in the congregation, our first chapel was located downtown on the corner of Poyntz and 5th Street. By 1911, we had outgrown our chapel and by 1915 had constructed our current church grounds. Through many years, many remodels, and many more members we still call 801 Leavenworth Street our home.
God has continued to bless this congregation and community, proving God’s faithfulness many times over.
Although First Presbyterian has grown in size we remain a harmonious, dedicated, and close-knit community to this day; seeking to serve Christ and love all whom we meet in a way that brings us together.
The authority of the church ultimately lies in the words of Scripture and the movement of God in our lives. God blesses every individual with unique and special gifts and talents that enable us to minister to each other and to the world in the name of Christ.
We believe that God calls certain individuals to serve the church body in specific leadership roles.
These individuals are nominated, ordained, and installed by the congregation as Elders who serve on the church’s Session, or Deacons serving on the Board of Deacons. These councils are designed to discern God’s Spirit as they seek to lead the people of God in ways that demonstrate the love and justice of Jesus Christ.
The Session of First Presbyterian Church consists of the pastors and the elders in active service and meets each month. All members of the session, including the pastor, have a voice in making decisions that shape the church’s direction and witness. The session is responsible for the mission, direction, and spiritual leadership of the church.
The Board of Deacons consists of women and men who are dedicated to a ministry of compassion, service, and sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus for God’s children in times of need. These people are the beating of heart of Jesus in the world, and lead us in ministries that demonstrate it.
